Summertime Mental Health Book Club

Join our free book club this summer and let's learn and change together. We will read and discuss The Worry Cure: Seven Steps to Stop Worry from Stopping You by Robert L. Leahy which addresses general worries and issues surrounding common areas of worry—relationships, health, money, work, and need for approval. This book is for everyone, from the chronic worrier to the occasional ruminator. Sessions run every second week on Thursday evenings from July 11 to September 5 in person or virtually. You are encouraged to attend every sessions but it is not required to attend them all. **Masks are optional for this class.

Our book club led by Kathlyn is centred on the values of:

  • Kindness and confidentiality

  • Non-judgemental approaches

  • Removing stigma with self-help

  • Fostering an empowering community

Kathlyn is finishing her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. She has a Bachelor's degree in child and youth care, and an Associate degree in social work. Anxiety and feeling stressed during life transitions are common reactions to change. This is particularly true if what happens is unforeseen or seems mostly beyond our control. This workshop will discuss anxiety and stress and explore topics such as:

  • How mental health is affected by change

  • The telltale indications and manifestations of anxiousness

  • Coping mechanisms for anxiety and stress management

  • Resilience/ bouncing back in the face of life's changes

  • Finding guidance through change with the help of counselling and other support

BEVEL UP (2007) is an award-winning documentary and learning resource created by the outreach nursing team from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). It follows street nurses in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside as they deliver nonjudgmental, compassionate and trauma-informed health care to people who use drugs.

Traditional Gua Sha for Self-Care

Learn how to use this simple, traditional technique to relieve pain and tension, and boost your immune system at home. Gua sha is an important modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine similar to cupping, but using a dull-edged tool to scrape the skin surface resulting in red petechiae (“sha”). It can be easily and safely practiced on yourself with the proper training. We will discuss safety and uses, conduct a live demo, and practice techniques for common ailments, so you can take this skill home with you!

*This is not a professional training or certification course. This is not a cosmetic or facial gua sha course. We will be focused on traditional medicine gua sha performed on the body. If you have a severe or chronic medical condition, please consult a healthcare professional before attending this course and using gua sha techniques.

DOPE IS DEATH (2020) is the story of how Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of Tupac Shakur, along with fellow Black Panthers and the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 - a visionary project eventually deemed too dangerous to exist in America.
